The clients who were located in Singapore wanted a relaxing home that would feel like a retreat away from the central city.
COATESVILLE RENOVATION | DESIGNING A HOUSE EXTENSION FOR AN INDOOR POOL
Our clients who were based in Singapore dreamed of an indoor pool retreat at their newly purchased home. A space where everyone could gather, have fun, and hang out. They provided us with a specific scope of work for their full home renovation and new house extension. The scope for the pool included an indoor pool and a dedicated chill-out area with a kitchenette. They also wanted to include a family entertainment area where they could all hang out to watch football and basketball games on the TV and enjoy snacks and drinks. The homeowners also requested that the space incorporate big windows to let in plenty of natural light, as well as skylights.
Working with overseas clients was a challenge, especially during COVID. It was clear in the early days of planning that this project required smart design thinking.
CREATING A HOUSE EXTENSION TO HOUSE THE INDOOR POOL
The Coatesville Renovation project was a challenging combination of functional and design requirements for a full home renovation, garage extension, and pool room extension along with a tight project timeline. However, as the renovation commenced shortly before the outbreak of COVID-19, COVID-19 would become the main challenge to complete the project.
The functional requirements included creating a house extension to house the indoor pool, and chill-out area complete with a shower. The addition of commercial-grade air extraction, radiant floor heat in the concrete floors, and finishes that would stand up to moisture complete the functionality of the space. Design requirements included adding large patio doors on the northeast side of the addition, and large window/sliding glass doors to act as a partition to the main house. two extra large skylights (Adlux skylights) flood the space with natural light throughout the day.
ADDING AESTHETIC ELEMENTS
Working with our architects, the aesthetic design fits perfectly within the constraints of the home and the Coatesville lifestyle. The room is wide open and low-slung, creating a comfortable, casual, and relaxed atmosphere. We needed to create a design to accommodate the indoor pool that also worked around the second-story kitchen windows on the existing house. The color and materials palette that the clients selected is soothing and relaxing. We used a T&G cedar ceiling to break up the expansive ceiling, and the extra large skylights provide plenty of natural light.
Ultimately, despite the challenges posed by COVID-19 related shutdowns and shortages of materials, the project reached its culmination in a span slightly exceeding 12 months. This achievement stands as a testament to the resilience and determination of all those involved – the team, subcontractors, suppliers and the Auckland City Council inspection team.
The home has evolved into a veritable oasis of relaxation, offering respite from the demands of modern life and those who look forward to retiring. Its very essence exudes a sense of tranquility, inviting the homeowners to unwind, engage, and bask in the embrace of a carefully cultivated ambience. The newly added extension, full home renovation not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the home but also introduces an entirely new dimension of functionality. The house extension pool area seamlessly integrates with the existing architecture, elevating the overall living experience and its connection to the main house. This remarkable project serves as a beacon of ingenuity, and perseverance, offering the homeowners and children an idyllic haven to unwind and relax for years to come.
