Planning Your Laundry

At Style Plus Renovations, we believe a good laundry renovation design needs to ensure there is enough space to safely move around in front of appliances and is highly functional.

The design of your new laundry area needs to be practical and it needs to contain all the right elements to allow you to do what you need to.

So taking the time to create a floor plan of your laundry interior space and investigating laundry design ideas is essential.

Mark on the plan where you would like your appliances. These positions can then be discussed with the project manager and plumber.

You will need to understand what needs to go into your laundry. Typically, when planning your laundry renovation, the following design ideas/items are included:

  • A washer.
  • A dryer.
  • Power outlets.
  • A laundry sink or basin.
  • Enough storage space for linen and cleaning products.
  • Possibly a bench.
  • Possibly additional storage cupboard space or consider replacing cupboards with drawers.
  • Outdoor access.

Where possible, when you are building or renovating your laundry, it is best practice to try and keep your appliances and plumbing all together on one wall. It will help save space and keep all the plumbing together. There will also be some cost savings by taking this approach.

For appliances and a laundry sink, the dimensions you will need to allow will depend on the available laundry room space.

For example, you will need to allow for about 800mm width for your washer or 1600mm if it’s going to be side by side with a dryer.

Most washers and dryers will fit comfortably into this amount of space. And for the sink, which could be a Robinhood Supertub you will need to allow about 560mm width.

LAUNDRY IN A CUPBOARD?

If space is at a premium, then planning your laundry renovation with a laundry cupboard in mind is a good alternative.

The advantage of this kind of setup is that it ‘borrows’ space from the room it is connected to, rather than sacrificing floor space exclusively for the purpose of creating laundry.

Typically, laundry cupboards incorporate either bi-fold doors or a sliding ‘pocket door’, which disappears into the wall cavity to further save space.

For your appliances, consider installing a “stackable” washer and dryer or a combined machine that washes and dries to leave open space for adding for example;

  • vertical shelving,
  • narrow storage towers,
  • wall-mounted ironing boards,
  • flip-down drying racks,
  • and/or drop-down utility tables.

Laundry design ideas;

  • When planning, consider where your dryer vent will go. Also, a condenser clothes dryer may be an option ( A condenser clothes dryer is a machine that looks just like a conventional tumble dryer, but which does not require an external vent.)

VENTILATION

To reduce condensation, you must have adequate ventilation if you do not have access to an exterior door.

Excess humidity is typically produced during the washing and drying of clothes. Moisture in the air will cause mould and may even damage your cabinetry and walls if it is not ventilated.

In the laundry, a large window that can be opened or an extractor fan are good ventilation options.

ELECTRICAL AND LIGHTING LAYOUT IDEAS

When reviewing your electrical plan for your laundry renovation, it is good practice to identify the location of every plug and light switch.

For example, laundry renovation design ideas;

  1. Determine the location of your light switches and ceiling light positions. Look at how you would use the room; where would you be ironing.
  2. Look at where you will require electrical sockets.

The correct laundry lighting is essential. Typically laundry spaces have little natural light. With lighting especially, it is important to assess your lighting plan once the framing is up and you see the actual spacing of the lighting.

It is much easier to have ample light and control via a dimmer switch than try to add another light after the renovation.

For example, laundry design ideas;

  1. You will need both task lighting and general room lighting, depending on the tasks you will carry out in your Laundry. LED strip lighting can be a great option under overhead cupboards.

PLAN FOR YOUR LAUNDRY STORAGE

When it comes to laundry design ideas for storage, we believe one of the best ways to make the best use of your storage space is to incorporate storage into as much wall space as possible.

Wall-mounted cabinets and open shelves can provide much of the storage you require. This can be achieved by custom interior cabinetry or off-the-shelf units.

For example, laundry design ideas;

  1. Using a custom-made interior storage system will maximise your available laundry interior space.

If your laundry room is a multifunctional space you can allocate one wall for laundry items, another to store household cleaners and another wall to use as a general storage cupboard space.

Installing a shelving system as far up the wall as you can is another storage option.

However, have a folding step ladder behind the door or in the space between appliances and bring it out when you need to reach these high-level items.

The area above your washer and dryer if they are placed side by side is another good option for storage.

If you can, choose a front-loading washing machine and make sure both appliances have controls on the front rather than the top.

You can place a countertop over them to provide a space for folding or to store laundry soap and fabric softener.

To make this space more attractive, store soaps in pretty glass jars or beverage dispensers.
