ARE WALLPAPERS A GOOD WALLCOVERING OPTION?

Wallpapers have evolved significantly over the years, with new designs, applications and durability.

Wallpapering is a popular way to add character to rooms by creating different textural and patterned effects. The ever-expanding selection of wallpaper textures, patterns, and colourways makes it simple to introduce a new element into your home.

As with most interior renovation projects, it is important to know what is available and whether that wallpaper design will complement my interior design.

WHERE CAN I USE WALLPAPER?

There are wallpapers for every taste, from traditional florals to contemporary geometric and tropical patterns, animal motifs, and architectural designs.

All wallpapers add dimension and style to rooms. Patterns, colours, and even fabrics, in general, create the illusion of more space or, at the very least, a focal point of attention. As a result, it is worthwhile to consider evaluating wallpapers for small-space projects. For example, a feature wall.

Wallpaper can also be used in entry halls, powder rooms, and dining rooms, and even in a man cave or home office.

WHERE NOT TO USE WALLPAPER

While there have been advancements in the durability of and materials used to create fantastic wallpaper over the years, it is important to consider whether your space is suitable for a wallpaper covering.

As a design team, we would be hesitant to use wallpaper in any area that will see a lot of wear and tear, especially if it is an expensive wallcovering. Also, Areas with high humidity, where the wallpaper covering will struggle to stay adhered.

TYPES OF WALLPAPER

There are three types of wallpaper.

  • Non-Pasted.
  • Pre-Pasted.
  • Self-Adhesive Wallpaper.

Non-Pasted: Because this wallpaper does not come with adhesive, you will need to apply it to your wall with paste. Though the pasting process can be tedious and time-consuming, it produces the most long-lasting results.

Pre-Pasted: Simply add water and this wallpaper is ready to use. There’s no need for gooey paste. Although quick and simple, this application style does not last as long as the others.

Self-Adhesive Wallpaper: Also known as peel-and-stick wallpaper, self-adhesive wallpaper works like a sticker; simply peel off the backing and stick it to the wall. It’s simple to remove and replace if you redecorate frequently.

WHAT DO ‘REPEAT’ AND ‘MATCH’ MEAN?

When reviewing wallpaper samples, one of the most important things to keep in mind is the repeat and match. Matches can be straight, drop, or random.

Straight match refers to matching the same patterns at the same height. It is the point at which the left and right edges of one wallpaper strip meet the left and right edges of the next wallpaper strip in a straight horizontal line. The design of drop-match wallpaper matches up across strips both vertically and horizontally.

There are various kinds of drop matches (most are half-drop or a quarter drop). This simply means that the pattern will correspond to a different location in the design for the following strip.

The random match means that the wallpaper strips can be hung together without having to worry about the pattern matching up at the seams. Random match patterns can be found in vertical stripe wallpaper, grass cloth, or textures.

DO YOU NEED A WALLPAPER HANGING SERVICE OR CAN YOU DIY WALLPAPER?

We recommend that you hire a professional to hang your wallpaper. Yes, it is an extra cost, but you’ve already spent time and money on the paper, and you should treat it as if it were a work of art.

You can expect the cost to be similar to that of hiring professional painters to paint the room. It may also require preparing the walls, and applying a coat or two of primer before the wallpaper is applied to the walls.

You’re asking for bubbles, bad trim lines, and uneven panel matches if you do it yourself. Making an attempt to save money by doing it yourself can be a costly mistake.
