Kitchen Renovations

Why Undertake Kitchen Renovations?

Kitchen renovations can be a major undertaking. So why undertake a kitchen renovation?

When it comes to renovating your kitchen, the reasons to change your kitchen may seem endless.

Maybe you are trying to increase the value of your home ready for a sale, or maybe you are just ready to change your dated kitchen for one that better suits your family’s lifestyle.

You may be in a position that your kitchen might simply be worn out and disfunctional. Peeling counter tops and doors, broken or missing cabinet doors and outdated appliances do not inspire gourmet cooking or family gatherings. The deteriorated kitchen has simply outlived its usefulness and needs more than a cosmetic upgrade, it needs a renovation!

A key incentive for a kitchen renovation is to create a space to best suit your family’s needs and lifestyle. Looking at how the current kitchen space is utilised or in many cases underutilised by the family is a starting point.

At Style Plus we believe that not all renovation projects are created equal. In general, people who are looking at purchasing a house will look at the kitchen and bathrooms first. While these spaces can be the most costly to renovate they are more likely to pay for themselves.

Homeowners often renovate their kitchen space to increase the value or make the home more appealing before selling the property. A renovated kitchen, modern, on-trend and polished will appeal to prospective home buyers more than a worn and outdated one.

Bathroom Renovation Planning

Bathroom Renovation Planning

The series of articles from the Style Plus design team look at key aspects of bathroom renovation planning. And what is undertaken during a typical renovation of a mid-sized bathroom.

Bathroom Renovation Planning

When renovating your bathroom there are a number of key design points to consider. Four of the most common electrical design topics are:

• power point
• lighting
• heating
• ventilation

Power point placement and how many you require are important considerations when renovating you bathroom. It is very easy to underestimate your needs.

Hand-powered grooming and cleaning tools are being replaced by high-tech, electrical devices. So try to take stock of bathroom appliances present and future while planning your bathroom renovation.

While planning your bathroom renovation consider whether electric powered devices will be run simultaneously. If this is the case, more circuits and power points can be added to accommodate the load.

For example;

  • Do you have two teens that are likely to be running hair dryers at the same time?
  • Do they also need a curling iron or hair straightener plugged-in and heating up while they are drying their hair?

Plan your power points accordingly.

If you like clean lines, you can improve the aesthetics of your bathroom by placing a number of power outlets in cupboards, cabinets or vanities.

For smaller bathrooms this may be a useful option where space is at a premium. Regular power outlets that are not installed inside cabinets are also useful when placed in optimal locations.

Plan with aesthetics in mind. Small details have a large impact in bathroom design. When planning power point placement there are three options to consider:

  • conceal
  • camouflage
  • complement

Sometimes all three options are taken.

The way power points need to be mounted and what protection is required is set out very specifically in AS/NZS 3000:2007. Your licensed electrical subcontractor should be completely familiar with all of rules and conventions.

If you do require an electrician, contact Style Plus and we will arrange for a qualified and experienced electrician to contact you and discuss your requirements.

Window Styles For Your Renovation

Window Styles For Your Renovation | New Build

Window styles help to define the style of your house whether it is a traditional villa or modern.

window styles

When you a planning your renovation or new build, there is a good range of residential window styles available to suit any functional and personal design style choice.

In addition to hinged, sliding or louvre styles, you can choose to install a skylight to increase natural light into your home.

window styles

When you start planning for your windows, you will notice that there are many different types of windows to choose from.

One of the most essential purposes of a window is to let ventilation and movement of fresh air in and out of your rooms. Windows are also one of the best ways to bring the outdoors in, flood the space with natural light and they help you connect with your exterior home for safety and security.

window styles requirements

Deciding which type of window suits your needs will help determine the type of window to be installed.

  • Review different window styles – Window and door suppliers offer a wide variety of options. Make the time to visit at least two showrooms and review the window styles on offer.
  • Choose windows that complement your interior as well as your exterior design.
  • Determine the orientation of the sun.
  • Selecting the right window for the amount of ventilation needed.
  • Choose windows that reflect your home’s architectural style
  • Decide what purpose your windows will serve?

Kitchen Design | Rangehoods

Rangehoods For Your Renovation – Kitchen Design

When the time comes to consider which rangehood to install for your renovation kitchen design, there are a couple to choose from:

  • canopy hoods
  • undermount or integrated hoods
  • retractable or slide-out hoods
  • tilt hoods
  • fixed hoods

canopy rangehoods

Canopy rangehoods have an appearance of a freestanding flue. These types are typically installed above an island cooking area in the centre of the kitchen. Wall canopy types are installed against a wall.

When planning your kitchen design, canopy rangehoods can be on the expensive side compared with the other systems.

Undermount rangehoods

An undermount rangehood or “powerpack” is integrated into the kitchen cabinetry. They are an increasingly popular choice for any renovation or new build kitchen design; unobtrusive and hidden away above your hob.

However, because they aren’t necessarily covering the entire area of the hob, they may not work as well as a canopy rangehood. For example, when extracting steam, depending on where your saucepan is located on the hob, extracting steam may not be great.

retractable or slide-out hoods

Retractable or slideout rangehoods have a fan and light that turn on as you slide them out manually.

Due to their smaller steam collection area they are generally less efficient at venting steam. This is especially the case in recirculating mode. On the plus side, once you finish cooking you can push them out of sight and out of the way.

Tilt Rangehoods

Tilted Rangehood

A tilt rangehood has an appearance of a cupboard. However, it is an extractor unit. Typically it is installed into the area above your hob. When the tilt door is pulled open, lights and the extractor motor operate automatically. For kitchens where exterior ducting is not possible, some tilt rangehoods provide a recirculation option.

These types of rangehoods are more effective than fixed ones at removing large quantities of steam. For example, if you frequently cook with all hob elements at once, a good tilt hood may be the best option.

On the down side, the controls for these types of rangehoods are usually typically behind the tilting front and are a little harder to use than the front controls of fixed or canopy types.

Bathroom Design Acrylic or Tile?

Acrylic Shower or Tiled Shower | Bathroom Design

When it comes to your renovation bathroom design, deciding on the materials for the shower walls is one of the most critical decisions you will have to make.

Deciding between acrylic or a tiled shower is one of the key decisions during your planning and design stage of your bathroom renovation or new build design. It is quite common that the final decision will come down to your personal preference, the available space and your renovation budget allocation.

However, before making your final decision, it is wise to understand the difference between these options.

Installing an acrylic liner for a shower is one of the most common options for a bathroom renovation or new build.

The acrylic liner is strong, flexible, water proof, typically white, shiny and easy to clean. They are glued to the walls and sealed with an overlap down to the shower tray. It is a very reliable system and very rarely gives trouble.

Tiled walls can look stunning. The tiled walls rely on the waterproofing behind the tiles to ensure there are no leaks.

Tile showers do come with a risk of leaks. If the shower pan is not sloped properly and if the tile grout is not sealed correctly, the shower can leak. There is also the risk of cracked tiles that could lead to leaks. Leaking can cause mould, mildew and rot underneath and behind your shower. However, with proper care a tiled shower wall can last for the life of your shower.

The cost of a tiled show does vary due to the selected format/quality of the tiles, fittings and area of the shower. In general tiled showers are normally designed as part of a fully tiled bathroom i.e. tiled to the ceiling.
