Our Quality Control For Renovations Or New Builds

QUALITY CONTROL FOR A RENOVATION OR NEW BUILD

Quality control for a renovation or new build can mean many things to clients. For example, the absence of defects, performance, durability and fitness for purpose.

The true definition of quality control is that it is part of a quality management process that ensures products and services comply with specifications/requirements.

The team at Style Plus North Shore Auckland review quality control for a renovation or new build:

Quality control

QUALITY ASSURANCE

Quality assurance is a set of planned tasks to ensure that products and services comply with specified requirements. This process involves checking the final quality of products to avoid defects, as is the case in quality control but it also involves checking product (renovation or new build) quality in a planned way in all the construction stages.

A common concern of clients is what management will be doing to monitor overall project quality and how they will make sure that the project quality controls are running the way that they should.

Every project has a quality manager – the one person in charge of the project quality. For Style Plus this is the project manager. While our project managers have overall responsibility for the quality of your project, our project site supervisors are primarily responsible for the day to day site operations and play a major part in quality control/assurance.

Style Plus implements quality assurance reviews to enable the early identification and remediation of any shortcomings in design and construction. This results in efficiencies and savings in project delivery.

Our weekly reviews include but not limited to:

  • Ensuring that the work task is ready to begin.
  • Handle material receiving and inspections.
  • Monitor work in process.
  • Verify that completed work meets project specifications.

THE COST OF QUALITY

Renovations or custom new builds are commonly a balance between cost, time and quality. It is possible to have high quality and low cost, however, this is at the expense of time. Conversely, it is possible to have a high quality and a fast project but at a cost. If both time and money are restricted, then quality is likely to suffer. For some clients, high quality is not always the priority, it may be time or cost that is important. For example, at Style Plus Renovations, our quality control for a renovation specifies a very high standard of quality if the budget is available to achieve that standard.

IS IT JUST ADDITIONAL PAPERWORK?

For Style Plus Renovations, it is not only about paperwork. Key people are delegated with specific responsibilities to deliver the correct quality, understanding what to look for and what the required quality standards are. It is also about the individual subcontractors and suppliers that have the required skills and take pride in the quality of their work.

CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT OR KAIZEN

The continuous improvement model reflects the idea that organizations should undertake incremental improvements to services, products, and processes. This model help to improve the quality of service.

Kaizen is a compound of two Japanese words that together translate as “good change” or “improvement.” However, Kaizen has come to mean “continuous improvement”.

Kaizen tries to improve the business as a whole by creating a standard way of working.

At Style Plus Renovation, we have adopted the Kaizen model as part of our project management methodology – continuous improvement by learning from our mistakes. We promote the following:

  • Mistakes are a human trait.
  • Mistakes are not a sign of failure.
  • Appreciate mistakes for what they are.
  • They are precious life lessons that are used for learning and for others to learn form.
  • Part of continuous improvement is learning from mistakes.
  • The only failure is the failure of not learning from your mistakes.

As Albert Einstein quotes:

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
