Spa baths have always been a great way to unwind and relax. Whether it be a spa bath for one or a corner spa bath for two.

For a master bathroom with space to spare you could make it an intimate transition to another space area with a spa bath.

There are a variety of spa sizes to choose from, from small two person spa’s to the larger spa. It is important to think about who will be using your spa and plan accordingly.

If you plan for a large spa bath you may need to reconsider other elements of your bathroom design. It may be necessary to update or even strengthen the flooring or even remove walls as part of the installation. You may want to consult with an architect | structural engineer to find out about floor reinforcements.

Ventilation is also an import design element when you are considering installing a spa bath. The spa room should either have a bathroom fan or another type of venting system installed to prevent excess condensation.

The cost of spa bath vary in price. For a large, 18 jets, two person corner spa you are looking at $2,000 upwards plus install costs. It is work shopping around to find the best price and quality.

STEAM ROOM

In general steam rooms and saunas often become confused. However, there is one simple difference. Saunas work using dry heat and steam rooms using wet. There are a few more technical differences but this is the essential division between the two.

Features of a steam room are:

• External steam generator

• Water is heated and injected into the room as steam

• Temperatures of up to 130°F (54°C)

• 100% humidity

• Waterproof construction e.g., Ceramic tiles/glass

• Sloping ceiling for condensation

• Floor drain for excess water

A cost guideline for a custom built steam room would be between $15,000 to $20,000.

SAUNA

If you enjoy steam in the sauna, higher temperatures and a more social environment, then traditional sauna may be the best sauna for you. If you prefer lower temperatures but with body-penetrating heat, infrared sauna may be your best sauna choice.

Infrared Sauna: The infrared sauna works on the basis of direct heat radiator elements that produce infrared radiation. The warmth is similar to that produced by the sun. The heat waves penetrate the body to effectively heat the body and raise the body core temperature. The infrared heat waves do not produce harmful radiation.

Traditional Sauna: The process for heating the room most often involves an electric heater that heats a compartment of stones, which then radiate the heat throughout the room. When the high temperature is achieved, the elements cycle on and off to maintain the high temperature. The insulated walls and the heated rocks will keep the room hot and at stable temperatures. In a traditional sauna, perspiration is achieved when the bather enters a heated room.

There is also the wood burning sauna for your spa room. Wood is used to heat the sauna by burning it in the stove. The necessary temperature is reached by controlling the amount of fire in the stove. The ideal temperature for this type of sauna is not less than 65.5 C when measured where a person is sitting. Throwing some water on the heated rocks controls humidity in the sauna.

A few components to consider while you plan your sauna are:

• Selecting the perfect type of sauna wood is essential for the overall sauna design.

• Careful consideration should be given to the choice of heater for your maximum satisfaction with your sauna.

• Determine the size of the heater you need. Heaters are sized in kilowatts (KW).

• Do you want wall mount controls on the wall outside the sauna room or do you want controls right on the heater?

• Allow for venting.

A cost guideline for a custom built sauna would be around the $10,000 mark.

A spa environment typically has a clean and fresh vibe and involves a soothing colour palette such as light blue, sage green, white, buttermilk yellow, and beige.

Use relaxing colours: When you walk into a commercial spa you enter into soothing atmosphere, low lighting and pastel, neutral or cool colours. Choose a colour palette that can make you calm, soothing and relaxing. For example use warm tones, warm browns, chocolate-like, dark oranges, dark yellows and similar shades create a relaxing environment.

Lighting: Allow for a dim or natural lighting. Low level lighting helps to create a relaxing atmosphere. For this you can use dimmable LED lighting. However, using candles can also achieve the desired ambience.

Using textiles: Textiles in general are great for making a room look more comfy. For example you could use rugs, large cushions and curtains, since they not only add a touch of luxury to the room but also make you feel more comfortable. Also, choose the most comfortable couch and armchairs you can find for a complete relaxing experience.

Using scents: Scents are an important part of a spa environment. Relaxing scents include vanilla, chamomile, roses or combinations of these. You can choose from essential oils, scented candles, scented sticks and so on. Combine your favourite smells and obtain the perfect essence for relaxing in the comfort of your own home spa environment.
